St Matthew lived in Capernaum, an ancient city in Galilee, at the time of Jesus. He worked there as a publican and tax collector, a very unpopular profession at the time, before joining Jesus and becoming one of his twelve apostles. For this reason, the evangelist Matthew is considered the patron saint of bankers, accountants, publicans and tax collectors and therefore he is represented with book and feather. The Gospel of Matthew is the longest of the four Gospels and consists of 28 chapters. This gospel forms a bridge between the Jewish and Christian scriptures and tells about the birth of Jesus and his childhood, the preaching and mission of Jesus, the five discourses on the kingdom of heaven and the death and resurrection of Jesus.
The stories are told in the form of sermons, parables and instructions and emphasise the enduring importance of Israel's religious traditions for its Christian readers. The evangelist Matthew particularly highlights the teaching of love (the 11th commandment) in the Gospel. The name Matthew means the gift of God, and the day of the apostle is celebrated on 21 September. The evangelist Matthew is honoured as a martyr.
