Info zur Skulptur "Evangelist St. Luke with ox"

The evangelist Luke was born in Antioch/Syria and came from a noble family. He was considered a close friend of the apostle Paul, whom he also accompanied on his missionary journeys. They preached in Rome and Jerusalem. After Luke left the eternal city, he settled in Achaia-Greece and died as a bishop at the age of 84. As there are often descriptions of healings of the sick in Luke's Gospel, it can be assumed that the evangelist Luke himself was a doctor. When writing the Gospel, Luke addressed followers of the apostle Paul, witnesses and spoke to the mother of Jesus. He drew on the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, but his Greek education is striking. Luke's Gospel tells us the most about the Mother of God, but Luke also wrote the Acts of the Apostles and the Christmas story, which is still often recited during the celebration of the Last Supper. When reading the Gospel of Luke, one realises that he was very concerned about fair social relations.
The attribute of the evangelist Luke is the bull, which is regarded as one of the mighty creatures of the Apocalypse. St Luke is usually depicted holding a book or a scroll and is shown writing the Gospel.
St Luke is considered the patron saint of doctors, painters, carvers, printers and glaziers.
Saint Luke's Day is celebrated on 18 October.
In the past, cattle were given consecrated pieces of paper with the Gospel of St Luke to eat on this day; this tradition was seen as protection against epidemics and accidents.
